Description

Historians estimate that during the "Golden Age" of pirates in the late 1600s to early 1700s, approximately 1/3 or 10,000 plus pirates were former African slaves in the western hemisphere. Although Caribbean black pirates were often delegated to the lowest tasks, many would still enjoy the freedom of bearing arms, equal wages, and voting, as was the standard of pirate crews. "One of the most famous black pirates was Black Caesar, who raided ships in the Florida Keys for almost a decade before joining Blackbeard aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge." (Britt, 2023).
